Pick Of The Week: Saint Laurent’s Mombasa bag

Yves Saint Laurent had already made safari part of the house vocabulary in the ’60s; when Tom Ford arrived at YSL, he picked up that spirit and turned it into the Mombasa. First appearing for Spring/Summer 2002, the slouchy crescent bag came with its sculptural horn handle and a certain touch that made it an object of desire. Then, it slowly made its way into wardrobes and the memories of those who had carried it the first time around. Now it is quietly reappearing, reintroduced in the Pre-Fall Saint Laurent collection by Anthony Vaccarello. The new Mombasa comes in 3 sizes: Large in 3 shades, Medium in 6 and Small in 6. The smaller version as seen in the image, arrives in leopard-print calf hair, lined in suede and finished with a leather covered handle, turning the familiar Mombasa into something slightly more evening. Vaccarello leaves the spirit of the original intact and allowing the Mombasa bag to find its place again, almost two decades after it quietly slipped into our hearts.
