Words by Nicole Atieno The Space Between Speed and Stillness: Enter the worlds of Audi Revolut F1® and ic! berlin What happens when you put a woman behind the wheel, inside the engineering and finally, behind the scenes of Formula One? Image Copyright: Audi Revolut F1® Team “I think definitely now we’re starting to see a lot more females choose this as a career. Because if you watch F1 Academy, that championship, like it’s now being seen as like a cool thing to do…” The question feels particularly relevant when spending a few days moving between the worlds of Audi and ic! berlin, two German names whose languages are, on the surface, very different, but whose shared vocabulary is one of precision, engineering and performance. We are given a deep dive into the RS range before being sent out onto the track ourselves. The radio crackles with instructions: change position, move left, lift off, let the others pass, then accelerate and follow the group. Suddenly, engineering is no longer something being explained to us; it is something happening underneath us, at speed. At the Marcolin showroom, the comparison becomes unexpectedly clear: stainless steel, grey tones, technical construction, an obsession with reducing unnecessary parts. The brand’s signature screwless construction began in 1996, replacing conventional mechanics with a system that allows individual components to be replaced instead of an entire frame. The result looks minimal, but the thinking behind it is anything but. ic! berlin describes itself as a designer brand with a strong affinity for both fashion and sports. Its partnership with Audi Revolut F1® feels like a natural extension of that territory. The collaboration has already produced a Racing Edition capsule with two frames, Ryan and Gabriel. Inside the Audi Revolut F1®Team garage, Formula One is all about logistics. The garage itself travels in sets around the world, assembled and dismantled by different teams from race to race. Even the fuel is engineered specifically for the Audi power unit. Everything has a function; nothing is accidental. Image Copyright: Audi Revolut F1® Team Formula One is all about logistics. And somewhere between the radio chatter, the engineers and the cars racing by in full speed, I ask our guide a question: how quickly will we see more women occupying these spaces? He responds, “F1 Academy is helping create a visible pathway, but its significance extends beyond the grid. Drivers move into mixed championships; the growing interest feeds into mechanics, engineering and other technical roles. As one member of the team puts it, on track, intuition matters but once the helmet comes off, communication takes over.“ Image Copyright: Audi Revolut F1® Team and ic! berlin Perhaps that is the lesson from the experience. Speed might be what gets your attention, but it is precision and people working together that keeps the whole thing moving.
