Julie Brøgger on her collection for & Other Stories

vor 3 years

At Fräulein we love the creative tension that builds up by mixing feminine and masculine styles – that’s why the new collection by Julie Brøgger for & Other Stories caught our eye.

The Danish designer founded her namesake brand Brøgger in 2017 and is known for wearable pieces, with which still stand out from the crowd with its hyper-structured and exaggerated forms (there is power in a shoulder pad!) For the Co-Lab with & Other Stories she designed flowery dot patterns  and oversize checks: feminine but with a peculiar dark twist. The collection includes dresses, tops, and a double-breasted suit made from silk or recycled polyester, modern pieces designed to wear again and again. We wanted to know more about the London-based designer Julie Brøgger and her inspirations for the Co-Lab, so we chatted with her, about her own favorite pieces and who she envisions wearing them:

Can you describe what your Quarantine has looked like this year? Have
any new subjects piqued your curiosity or interest?
Julie Brøgger: I was 3 months pregnant when we first went into lockdown in London, so everything felt a bit scary, as we didn’t know much about it. I really needed to stay busy to keep my mind from going into a spin. I dove into work with both a SS21 collection for a digital presentation at CPH FW and this collection with & Other Stories. W hen I was not working, I was doing jigsaw puzzles nonstop. My favorites are those 1980s looking with kittens or ponies. It will probably be years before I have time to do that again!

Where do you find hope and light in these dark times?
JB: In the belief that this will pass and yes it will have consequences, but there will be a world full of fun, adventure and experiences waiting for us again.

What kind of women do you envision wearing such strong colors and cuts?
JB: I definitely design for women that use their wardrobe as a tool of empowerment, and who dare to be seen. What you wear should make you feel great. That is essential to me.

What is your favorite piece in the collection?
JB: A blazer always make me feel good. To me, it is the best accompaniment to most of my wardrobe, from jeans to dresses.

Can you tell me a bit about your collaboration with & Other Stories?
What a fantastic opportunity! Were you a fan of theirs before this? What
pieces of theirs do you remember wearing and loving? For me, it is their
leather accessories … and nail polishes 🙂
JB: It is a great opportunity! Like Brøgger, they offer their customers investment pieces that last beyond one season. Our mutual Scandi background makes a perfect fit. I have worn a lot of their knit wear (and yes those nail polishes!)

If you could style a movie, who would be the director?
JB: I’m obsessed with the Undoing right now with Nicole Kidman. The director, fellow Dane Susanne Bier, would be inspiring to work with.

What music are you listening to these days? Is there a musician you
would love to see wearing a piece from this collaboration?
JB: Right before the pandemic in February I went to a concert with Lianne La Havas and the BBC symphony orchestra at the Barbican Center. It was magical and she has such a powerful presence. She would look great in this collection.

Thank you for your time and consideration in your answers, Julie! And
congratulations on the beautiful collection. We at Fräulein are big fans of
the bold and the beautiful, and you have embodied this philosophy to the
MAX.
JB: Thank you so much! Happy holidays xx
